There are a number of students and staff at Queen Mary who suffer from severe reactions to peanut and nut products; milk products, various fruits, wasp stings and severe temperature changes. As a result of the number of different allergies and the severity of some reactions, we take this issue very seriously.
Students and parents are asked not to bring any nut based product to school. Even products that contain traces of nuts or nut oils can result in severe and toxic reactions. Students are asked to wash their hands after they eat and custodial staff wash off all the desks after each meal.
All staff at Queen Mary have been trained in how to respond to a student who is having a severe allergic reaction. This reaction is known as an Anaphylactic response and can result in death.
All staff have seen the photographs of all students who have allergies that result in an anaphylactic reaction so we can respond quickly and effectively should there be an emergency situation at the school. The best way to ensure that no such reaction occurs is prevention.
Please do not bring nut products to the school even if they are in your pocket or purse and will not be taken out while you are in the building.
Please respect the signs posted throughout the building to not bring in any nut product regardless of type.
Please do not bring home baking in to share with the class even if you are certain that such products are nut free. The responsibility should you be incorrect would be unbearable should there be a tragic reaction.
Please wash your hands before you come into the building if it is at all possible for you to do so. You may use the washrooms at the school if you wish.
Thank you for supporting student safety. If you have any questions please contact the school at 745-1353.
