May 10 - The children had a wonderful performace at Showplace for the RCM Finale.  They were so respectful and attentive to the other performers and truly made us all proud.  Their voices were clear and sweet and gave me one of my most cherished memories of this year.

PLEASE NOTE:  Our END OF YEAR BOOKS - As grand and wonderful an idea as the end of year books were, the children have taken a vote and decided to not go through with them.  The books started out as a (I think) fun and engaging way to combine all of the different writing forms, games, etc. that we have learned this year.  Nothing new to learn, just a new way of delivering all of this great learning.  I really did not want to put more work onto the children, just for the sake of doing it.  I also was not going to create work that they would have to prepare or do at home.  That would be the opposite of fun, and we cannot have that :)  So, we have decided to let the idea go, and none of the children seem heartbroken over that prospect.

Math
We continue to work on representing our math thinking in different ways and are using lots of tools and strategies in order to do that in the best way we can.  Right now, we are working on consolidating our vast bank of math knowledge, by using various problem solving strategies across all strands of math.  Mainly in small groups, we are challenging ourselves to differing types of questions and problems that require multiple steps and logical reasoning.

Success  Criteria For Representing our Math
- answer the whole question
- be efficient
- make your work organized
- use comparisons where needed (e.g., 96 candles is more than a Birthday girl's age or 90, so, we will have enough candles for her cake, with 6 left over)
- make sure your thoughts are shown clearly, from beginning to end

Language
In language, we are working on how to answer a question completely, by looking for and utilizing information from the text along with our own ideas, to provide a clear, focused answer.

Science
We will continue to study plants and soils this month.

Social Studies
We will be learning about urban and rural areas and creating and reading maps.

The Arts
We will be embarking on more great art activities, including manikin making.
Thank you for all of your support!

Homework Assignments: Each week, beginning Monday, September 11, 2011, I will be sending homework home with your child, to be completed by Friday.  These will generally be word study assignments.  Then, on each Friday, we will be having a spelling test.  I will try my best to have these done, marked and going home the same evening.
