March/April News - Room 7

We are learning:

  • To write friendly and persuasive letters.
  • To answer questions using the APE strategy (Answer, Prove, Expand).
  • To determine the main idea of text to help us understand what we read.
  • About the Inuit People.
  • About urban and rural communities.
  • To use the “Make Ten” and “Use Doubles” strategies to help us add and subtract 2 and 3 digit numbers.
  • About Forces, Movement, Simple Machines, Mechanisms.
  • To make masks that reflect our identities.
Our school is on a Five day cycle, therefore subjects such as Gym, Computer Lab, Library, and Music will not always be on the same day. I try to keep Art on a Friday so that we remember not to wear our best clothing on that day, then we can be creative and not have to worry about ruining our clothing.

Homework- Continue to read to your children as much as possible even when they can read to themselves. Also, have discussions with your child about what is being read and life in general. Continue to ask them the time and give them opportunities to count money.

Dates to Remember:

March 7, 21- Artist in the classroom Mask Making

March 7-25- Drama with PCVS Students in the classroom

March Break - 9th to the 16th

March 28- Scientists in the School- Force of Course

Regards,

January/February News - Room 7
We are back to our routines following the holidays, as well as starting new ones. I am introducing Daily Math wherein students are expected to complete weekly consolidating/practice activities independently, making way for important small group/individual instructional opportunities. As usual, the children are responding positively and enthusiastically.

We are learning to:

  • Compare similarities and differences between celebrations of different cultures
  • Identify common liquids and solids and describe their characteristics
  • Express personal opinions about ideas presented in texts
  • Identify the elements of fiction (e.g., characters, setting, problem, solution)
  • Make inferences about texts using both stated and implied ideas
  • Proofread and correct our writing using a simple checklist
  • Identify various polygons (e.g., rectangles, triangles, hexagons etc…)
  • Use hands on materials (e.g., base ten blocks) to add and subtract two-digit numbers

  •     Continuing to build listening skills and independence.
  •     Elaborating on our writing by adding details.
  •     Narrowing our topic by “Writing a lot about a little”.
  •     Learning about the three states of matter (Solids, Liquids, Gases), and strong, stable structures.

October News - Room 7

It is hard to believe that four weeks have gone by! I am very pleased with how the children in our classroom community are working together to create a cooperative, respectful learning environment. They deserve a pat on the back!
We have been:
  • Working on stamina and towards independence during Daily 5 (Read to Self, Work on Writing, Word Work, Read to Someone, Listen to Reading)
  • Learning about the reading strategies- Check for Understanding, Back-up and Reread, Abundant Easy Reading, Cross Checking…Do the pictures and/or words look right? Do they sound right? Do they make sense?
  • Building listening skills
  • Generating and developing ideas when we write
  • Learning about repeating, growing and shrinking patterns and problem solving in Math
  • Learning that Canada is a country of many cultures and that the world is made up of countries, continents, and regions, and people’s lifestyles may differ from country to country

Our school is on a Five day cycle, therefore subjects such as Gym, Computer Lab, Library, and Music will not always be on the same day. I try to keep Art on a Friday so that we remember not to wear our best clothing on that day, then we can be creative and not have to worry about ruining our clothing.

Homework- The best support you can give your child is by reading to them and with them. Continue to read to them as much as possible even when they can read to themselves. Also, have discussions with your child about what is being read. The other practice I highly recommend to support your child’s education is to have conversations with your child about anything and everything. You might be surprised at the insights that they have- I know I always am. Telling time and counting money is something you can also help with. Both can be difficult concepts to master, and take time (no pun intended) to learn.

Boomerang Lunch-For environmental reasons, everything brought or bought for lunch is returned home. Children are encouraged to rinse out containers before bringing them home; this practice supports responsibility and independence. Thanks so much for your cooperation.

Regards,

Suzanne Balson
