Mr. Stever's Notes from the Gym

Welcome to this new school year. I hope that you and your family have had an enjoyable summer. I am looking forward to getting to know each of the students in the primary classes as we work together throughout this year. The aim of the primary health and physical education instruction this year will be towards Healthy Active Living. I will be using the health and gym period to instruct the students to become competent in a wide variety of physical activities that benefit the development of the whole person. As well, students will be working on the skills to make healthy, active choices to maintain personal health, to be respectful of themselves, and their community.

Physical activity during gym class is the key component for student learning. As such, participation is mandatory for all students. ‘Not participating is Not an option’. Students need to put their best effort into each gym period. Students are more likely to adopt healthy active living practices and maintain these practices if they put forth their individual best effort each class. Student safety and sportsmanship is emphasized in each class. The students are learning in a public space where classmates can see them explore, learn, make mistakes, and succeed. Respect for each other as we learn together will develop the capacity to participate and enjoy the healthy active life choices.

Along with the proper attitude towards healthy active living, students need to come to class with the appropriate gym shoes. Students are expected to have running shoes that tie up properly either with laces or Velcro. These shoes need to be the non-marking kind (which most children’s running shoes are) and if possible, they should have the students name clearly labelled in each shoe.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding anything that is happening within our classroom, please feel free to discuss this with me either by calling me at the school or making an appointment to see me in person. I like to keep the lines of communication open so that any small issues that may arise can be dealt with before they become large concerns. Contact me by phone at 745-1353 or by email at james_stever@kprdsb.ca.
