KINDERGARTEN NEWS: January 2012
Hopefully you have had a wonderful holiday, filled with lots of fun and relaxation.
Home Reading Program
In December we had begun the Home Reading Program with the Senior Kindergarten group. We will eventually be sending books home for the J.K.'s to experience. This program encourages the link between school and home; and encourages your child to share her/his excitement about reading. There are a few S.K.'s who need to send back their book and folder please, in order to continue sending books home.
Scholastics
Scholastic book orders will be due: Tuesday the 17th.
Dress for the Weather
Please ensure that your child is dressed for the weather, as well, she/he should have an extra set of clothing here at the school. (Socks are particularly needed with the cold and wet weather.) Please ensure that your child has his/her name on all articles of clothing, especially snow pants, as many do look the same.
Jolly Phonics Program
So far we have learned and reviewed the following letters. As explained previously there is an action that goes with each of the letter sounds that your child should know. I continue to send the weeks letter for you to support your child's learning.
Ss, Aa, Tt, Pp, Ii, Nn, Cc/Kk, Ee, Hh, Rr, Mm, Dd and Gg.

Happy 2012
It’s a New Year! Most children now know what month they were born and what season, or time of year. Please help your child to remember their birthdates, as well as their address and phone number, as part of learning numbers in math. January, January what do I see? I see snowflakes falling on me. February, February what do I see? Valentine's all around me!

Forms are due back by February the 7th, if your child will be attending French Immersion at Prince of Wales School in September of 2012.
Valentine’s Day
This is my favorite time of the year! Valentine’s is special because we show love to our family and friends by writing cards. And I love writing! Many of the children are enjoying writing postcards in our Vacation Play Center. Here is a list of the children in our class, if your child wants to get started early.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day, this month for those who hold this Irish celebration in their hearts! I am happy to see the colour green at this time of the year. We are looking forward to March Break this month, from the 9th to the 20th.
Report Cards
Junior and Senior students have received their report cards recently. You may keep the report card for your own records. We would, however, like to have the third page (comments) returned, along with the envelope. Please do not hesitate to call me if there are any concerns, or questions about your child's progress.
Scholastic book orders due: Tuesday the 20th of March.
Student Teacher and Volunteers
Laura Appleton has been sharing the classroom with both Kindergarten classes for the past few weeks. Laura is a student at Trent University completing her Teacher’s training. She has been doing a superb job with the students. We would also like to thank Gerald McKinley, as well as Stephanie and Sandra (community volunteers), who continue to work in our classroom on a regular basis.
Home Reading Program
We are beginning to send out reading books to many of the students in our class, including the J.K.’s. If you should receive a Home Reading package, please remember to read the comment that you make on the ‘Comment Sheet’ to your child, as he/she always loves to hear how well they are doing, especially from you!
Extra Set of Clothes
Please ensure that your child has an extra set of clothing, as well as running shoes for gym use. These items should be left at the school, in your child’s basket.
Jolly Phonics
We continue to use the Jolly Phonics program to teach new letters each week. The children look forward to the new stories, activities, songs and homework.

HOPPY EASTER!
KINDERGARTEN: April 2012
Spring is finally here and with it comes sunshine, mud and water; so please don’t forget to pack extra socks, change of clothes and other appropriate clothing for your child. We do try to get outside for outdoor activities, and want the children as happy and as comfortable as possible.
Parent Volunteers
Gerald McKinley, Stephanie Smith and Sandra Noble continue to work as volunteers in our classroom. We appreciate the hard work that our volunteers do on a weekly basis. Thank you!
Friends…old and new
We have lost two senior boys, but gained one senior girl in our class. We are now at 17 students, 6 S.K.’s and 11 J.K.’s. We welcome an E.C.E. trainee, Katelyn M. from Sir Sanford, and a student teacher Mr. Bateman from Trent University. They will spend the next few weeks with us.
Scholastic Book Orders
Due: Thursday, April 12th.
Easter visitor
Last week, Addison’s Mom, Christina brought Freud the bunny to our classroom for a visit. Hopefully Freud can come back during our Easter party which is being held on Thursday the 5th. If you are able to donate any treats for the party, we would be grateful. Thank you to all the parents who have sent in boiled eggs as requested. We will be decorating the eggs this week.

Spring is here! With the changing weather, especially hot weather, we are asking parents and caregivers to send their children with appropriate clothing: Most importantly hats! Sunscreen is something I suggest, however I recommend that you apply it at home in the morning, rather than sending it to school with your child.
Earth Day-April
We continue to use the concept of 'boomerang lunches' with the children at school. This means that all garbage and recycled material are put back into your child's lunch bag and returned home. Because of this, unfortunately, the children do not get as much opportunity to learn about recycling in general. Especially, how we sort recycled materials from garbage. We have talked about recycling and reusing and the importance of doing so, for the environment. Encouraging your child to empty his/her lunch bag and help sort and clean it would be a valuable lesson to help the earth. My motto is Earth Day should be everyday!
Plastic bags needed: This is a time of year that we could really reuse plastic bags, so if you collect them and can spare some, we could certainly reuse them here at the school.
On the Bus Trip with Peterborough Green Up
This trip will be a great lesson to our children about using transportation in an environmentally friendly way. On Friday, May 11th we will be taking a bus tour around Peterborough in a city bus.
Field Trip to the Ecology Park
On Tuesday June 5th, Mrs. Woodbeck and our class are booked to go to the Ecology Park. We will be learning about Natural habitats. Please call me at the school, or leave a note in your child's message bag, if you are interested in volunteering.
Classroom Incubator
This year we are attempting to hatch duck eggs using an incubator. The children are very excited to see if these ducklings will arrive mid-May. Your child should keep you posted.
Thank you volunteers!
I would like to extend a warm thank-you to our regular volunteers in
our classroom: Stephanie Smith, Sandra Noble, Karen Clysdale and Gerald McKinley. Thank you so much for the dedication and hard work you put into making our class a great learning environment!
