MAY NEWSLETTER
MATH ,SCIENCE & ART update
Our daily carpet math lesson includes:
-"How Many Days Have We Been to School?"-- a tally on a place value chart. We are coming onto our 80th day at school already!!
- Counting by 2's, 5's, 10's, and 25's to 100 (Gr. 1's) and 200 (Gr. 2's)
-Finding the number that comes before, and comes after (from 1-200)
- Graphing the temperature outside on a line plot graph or bar graph
We have had a very successful past month, and have had continuous practise using base ten blocks to represent numbers from 1-100, as well as using them to add and subtract. We continue to solve various word problems using pictures, numbers and words. Our goal is to show our math thinking the best way we can, and use as many strategies as possible to create a better understanding of numbers. Some strategies that we have used in numbers are :
Identifying Friendly Numbers (5, 10)Example of student's thinking: 9 + 3= 12 because I know 9 is closest to the "friendly number" of 10, and 10+3 is 13, so it must be one less than that.
Knowing my Doubles 1+1, 2+2, 3+3, 4+4.....etc. Example of student's thinking: 4 + 5 is a lot like 4 + 4 (which I know is 8) so it would be one more, which is 9.
Adding 10's 10+ 1= 11 10+ 2= 12.....I know that the ones number that I an adding is in the answer! There is a pattern.
Groupings/Multiplication (Grade 2 focus) I can draw groups of numbers such as 2 groups of 3, and I know that is 2 X 3 = 6. I will practise using this new strategy!
Science :
In Science, we have completed our unit on Liquids, Solids and Gases. We have moved now to discussing and using various materials and objects. Already we have built different structures using a variety of materials such as milk cartons, lego, plastic tubes, etc. We have also investigated various objects in our classroom and discussing the type of material things are made out of, distinguishing whether they are natural or manmade. Students will be assigned to build their own spaceship in the upcoming weeks using recycled materials from school. If you are able to send in some small recyclable materials to assist your child in his/her creation, that would be appreciated (egg cartons, tubes, plastic containers,etc.. In
Science this month, students will have an opportunity to self-evaluate by rating their role as a group member on a scale of 1-5, and explaining their strengths and weaknesses during a task performance.
Art: Our focus this month has been on cultural artwork, and we have learned of Inuit artist, Pootinook who was well known for his beautiful printmaking and metal
carving skills. The students replicated this idea using aluminum foil and permanent markers, creating a bright and beautiful picture! Now, students have begun their artwork inspired by Russian artists, Kandinsky using bright pastel and 2-D geometric shapes to create a thought-out artistic design. These will be displayed in our classroom. Students will again be self-reflecting upon their artwork using the one-star, one-wish approach.
Please remember that my door is always open to answer any of your questions or discuss any concerns you may have! Thank you.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Winslow
Please avoid sending any personal toys with your child. Unfortunately personal belongings/toys (especially “Beyblades”) are becoming the source of many problems at our recess time. We know these are often expensive too, and it seems home is the best and safest spot for them. We have told the students that if they are brought, they may be taken or damaged so it is their own responsibility, not the schools. Thank you for your support in this matter.
The Grade 1 and 2's will be regularly using their student agenda. Please help to remind them that it is an important organizational tool and it needs to be brought to school each and every day. Please check and sign your child's agenda daily so that there is on-going home and school communication.
